That's not a bad idea! There's a similar concept in Ib as well, where you need to switch between two stages that can interact with each other and the like. ^_^
It'd be kind of fun if you could do things to up your stats or otherwise interact with the towns-- like, Vash could play with kids, or go talk to people in the bar... Wolfwood could drink or go outside and smoke... Milly and Meryl could hang out with each other, things like that! X3 It'd also be fun if other characters could interact with each other in towns or the like.
Oooh boy am I getting way way WAY too ahead of myself, but hey, that's what brainstorming is, right? XD

Do you guys mind if I make a suggestion? Perhaps we could give ourselves a certain amount of time, say, until Friday, to each come up with one or more ideas for a stand-alone plot. Then this weekend, we can post the ideas we had and compare them (including the idea of using Trigun's pre-existing plot) and pick out one we like the most. Then we can start fleshing out that idea and applying some of these freakin' sweet ideas everyone's coming up with.
But don't stop coming up with the freakin' sweet ideas in the meantime!

Woah. This is all pretty intense. I'll be honest, I've never worked on an RPG game or a game for that matter and I'm not sure how my skills could be translated to helping design its interface. I'd have to do research. But I would really love to help out if I could! Even if its just making a demo video in the end or motion graphics during gameplay.

Well, if you think of any way you'd like to help, let us know. We might also send out calls while working on the game for when stuff comes up that we hadn't thought of. (For example, no one's even mentioned background music yet, and who knows what other little things we'll hit on later.) At the very least, you could be a beta tester of some kind and give us feedback as we gets parts of the game done.

I've got the entire Trigun OST (The First Dounuts, The 2nd Dounut, Spicy Stewed Dounut) so if we find a way to transform it into smaller-sized .mid files, we could probably use them in the RPG Maker game files. I've seen RPG Maker games with .mp3 files, but that jacks the game size wayy up, which may cause some people not to download the game come finishing time. But we can worry about that later, haha~ I'm not a pixel artist, but my formative years were spent doodling in oekaki paintbbs before it had gauzy brushes, so that's got to count for something. And I'm willing to help do the face art, with as many expressions as you would like from Vash & co! Since they're only 48x48 pixels, they will likely be easy to make (watch me eat my words in the future haha..) Here's a hasty 15 minute example of what I'm talking about: Strained smile, strained sweat drop, laughing strained sweat drop (name of files)... hahaha~ Since I also have RPG Maker experience, I'm willing to help use your ideas to make it into the game itself. Who else has RPG Maker experience? Perhaps it'd be good to open up a Skype account with all of us wanting to participate in the making of the game so we can just go back-and-forth and see which stage everyone's at. We could have daily/weekly "summaries" to post here so everyone can see where we've advanced to, and others can join in to make suggestions once we start having something decent to show. What do you think?

Aaaaah! Those little Vash faces are so cute!
I've actually been making a list of everyone who's voiced interest and what they've offered to contribute. There's a few of us who've fiddled with RPG Maker, but haven't done a serious project with it. We "programmers" will have to re-acquaint ourselves with it.
Speaking of, I think RPG Maker, and RPG Maker 2k3 are the free ones? Is that right? Karaii, I think you said you've used both. Do you have any preference between the two? I think I'd like to download one sometime this week, just to start checking it out and refreshing my memory.
The Skype thing's not a bad idea. Personally, I think for the time being we can just stay on here, and maybe look into it more once things get going. But it's up to you guys.
(P.S. I have a good idea for a plot, I think. I'll have to keep musing throughout the week and see what happens.)

Wow, this whole idea seems awesome! I would love to get in on it too, if I can. I don't really know anything about art or RPG Maker, but I would be happy to contribute my writing and editing skills to this project. @plant Feathers - That's a good idea! I'll try to think up a plot by Friday, incorporating a few of the ideas everyone's been kicking around. I think the challenge will be limiting the game, rather than coming up with something! karaii - I don't know if it's best to use the original Trigun music because of copyright issues, but maybe we could make piano or synthesized versions? There are also fan-made versions of Trigun music out there already made, so maybe we could ask to use them, as long as we give credit! Also, I am amazed that you came up with those sprites in 15 minutes! Hats off to you! theredgunslinger - It's fun to get excited about the project! Dialogue is going to be super important, I bet - and fun to write, too. Do we have a general idea as to genre? Will it be an action game, or a turn-based RPG, or a puzzle-type game, or a blend? I suppose it will be dependent on the storyline chosen... I like the idea of talking on Skype, too!

@thought-ripples: Welcome aboard!
Music - When the time comes, we ought to see if any fans here or on Tumblr are musically inclined and would like to make some music for us. Even if we can use the soundtrack (original or edited) I think it would be cool to extend the offer just to give people the chance.
Genre - I think we're sort of waiting on plot ideas. RPG Maker is designed for turn-based RPGs, but you can make an adventure game instead if you wanted. Possibly a puzzle game if you got really creative with the program. IMHO, I'd like to make use of the battle system to at least throw a few gunfights in there. I feel like that will help keep the game similar to the atmosphere of the original story.

I have more experience with the original RPG Maker 2000, but honestly I think 2K3 looks and runs better. Here's a download link for RPG Maker 2K3. It's safe to install, and there are instructions in the zip file if you're confused. The only problem is that RPG Maker runs solely on Windows computers. You can run it on a mac (like I do!) using CrossOver, or Parallels or Bootcamp or whatever you like that lets you run Windows on your Mac. Once you download it, I suggest you play around with it to get a feel for how stuff works! You can also download already completed games from a number of websites, but I personally recommend the game Off (download link at the bottom of the first post). I suggest digging around this game's files and checking out what new maps they've added or how they've modified the characters to get an idea of how this works. You can also open the game from within RPG Maker 2K3 (instead of just clicking the RPG_RT.exe file to run the game) to see how they handle events, dialogue, character stats, and how the battle system works behind the scenes, etc.

I wish I had any skill in musical composition to help you guys. But I really don't. Though, I think using the original soundtracks sounds like a totally viable option. Maybe even some well done fan music, with permission? I'm sure there must be something like that out there. As for gunfights, I have seen such a thing done in RPG maker! If you've ever heard of a game called Schuld, there is a stage completely based around dodging patterns of bullets and shooting turrets, with a shooting stage at the end. So I wouldn't say it's out of the question! You can do a LOT with RPG maker if you're creative with it. I've seen a lot of RPGmaker games that have really innovative ways to include puzzles, action, horror... if you ever need ways to integrate story into gameplay, I can probably suggest an example to base the idea off of. Maybe we should have a vote on standalone vs. adaptation for the plot? Knowing for sure which we're doing will definitely speed things up in terms of plot and brainstorming and all that. ^_^

I vote we do a standalone story!
The reasons are these: - We won't have to winkle out what we'd use from the anime or the manga; we can use whatever serious or silly ideas come to mind. - It will be simpler, and the world should be smaller. - As a completely fan-made work, it will hold fresh appeal for people. - We can learn the ropes! If we decide we love doing this we can do another one after gaining experience.
That's my two cents, anyway. Thoughts?

I originally wanted to do an adaptation for the reason that we could possibly do more with the gameplay, but honestly, you have a much better argument than I do, so I concede. I vote for a standalone as well. ;D

karaii: Oh man, you rock! Thanks for all the links! @everybody: I also vote for stand alone. Like Thought-ripples said, we can fit any idea we have into the story easier than trying to work out how to fit it into the existing plot. We'd also be able to shorten or lengthen the plot easier if we get into actually making the game and realize things are easier/harder than we thought. Funny story: For some weird reason, my brain relapsed into the days of dial-up, and I thought, "That RPG Maker's probably going to take a while to download, like maybe a few hours. I should start the download before I go to work and it can download while I'm gone." So I downloaded it and was like, "Oh... that was fast... Duh..." Herp derp, since when has a download taken a few HOURS? XD

Well, guys, it's Friday. (Friday, Friday, gotta get down on Friday...) Anyone have plot ideas to share, or do we want more time?
On another note: I think this game needs some kind of mini game that involves Kuroneko-sama. Trigun's resident cat needs to make an appearance. :3

Hey all! So here are two ideas for plots for a Trigun game. What do you think? Whichever plot we choose, I think it would be fun to have everyone contribute to writing the dialogue that would happen between the main characters and between main characters and NPCs.
Trigun Game Story Idea #1
Meryl and Millie are traveling, searching for Vash. They meet Wolfwood and are catching up when they hear a rumor that Vash has been caught and is being held in another town. They go there and find an impostor who's a member of a Vash-imitator cult. The cult members dress like Vash, dye their hair, and want to support him (kind of like Knives' Gung-Ho Guns) - all without Vash's knowledge or permission. The real Vash shows up and gets the police to release the fake Vash, who then runs away. Vash and company decide to follow him and try to talk the leader of the cult into disbanding the group. They get to the cult's hideout and have to solve puzzles and occasionally fight to get to the cult leader. PLOT TWIST: The leader is one of Millie's many siblings! They have a conflict with the leader and either 1. They defeat the leader and he agrees to back off, 2. They convince the leader to join them for a while and stop the Vash-imitators from doing anything, or 3. The leader sees Vash being totally uncool to the point where he loses his illusions about how Vash is and decides to break up the cult out of sheer disgust. (I like the last scenario the best!)
Game type: adventure/RPG/puzzle Locales: desert, one town, saloon, another town, sheriff's office/jail, cultist hideout (several parts), final showdown room, epilogue room, etc.
Trigun Game Story Idea #2
Vash is out traveling between towns and runs into Wolfwood, whose bike has broken down again. As they walk together they run into some newly-reactivated machines and have to enter a derelict ship to turn them off. When they do, they discover that a human agent or agency is behind it; this person or group of people knock them out with gas. When they wake up they find that they are imprisoned in such a way that they will be exploded if they try to break out. There is a villain who has figured out both Vash and Wolfwood's secrets - that Vash is a plant, and that Wolfwood has super mega healing. Said villain decides to go off and get something that will allow him or her to exploit this knowledge. Monologue! Comedy! Dismay! When the villain leaves, the girls sneak in (Millie planted a tracker on Wolfwood's bike), and they free Vash and Wolfwood. Since Vash and Wolfwood have both comically lost at least some of their clothing, they must either retrieve their clothes or use amusingly wrong-sized guard clothing. They then try to get back out again, fighting their way free. The game could include battles here - if they are fighting machines, using lethal force; if they are fighting human guards, non-lethal. The four escape only to find that the leader has sent his or her machines against a nearby town to capture the town's plant, planning to use Vash to tap its power for nefarious reasons. Then the four must go and save the day. At the end they have to stop the person with "Love and Peace!" and rescue the ship's plant for use in a town. The game ends with Vash running away again, the insurance girls in hot pursuit, and Wolfwood sauntering after.
Game type: adventure/RPG/puzzle Locales: desert, derelict ship, containment center, derelict ship again, town (various), final battle location, epilogue desert
I look forward to seeing your ideas!
